All Of Your Kratom Questions Answered:
What Is Kratom?
Kratom is derived from the leaves of Mitragyna Speciosa, a tropical evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia which belongs to the Coffee Family of flowering plants. The leaves are harvested, and most commonly dried and ground to create Kratom powder, though they can also be made into an extract or resin using various processing methods. At least 25 alkaloids have been identified in Kratom so far, with the most predominant alkaloids being Mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. These alkaloids are considered the active ingredients in Kratom as they act on specific receptors in our central nervous system. The first documented use of Kratom as an herbal remedy goes back to 1836 when Dutch botanist Pieter Willem Korthals formally recorded his experience with the plant in what is now Indonesia. It is believed that natives of Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Papua New Guinea had been using Kratom in traditional medicine for many centuries before this first introduction to the Western World, but unfortunately there is no record to confirm or deny this.
What are the effects of Kratom?
When taken in small amounts Kratom is known to be a natural energy and mood enhancer. When larger amounts are used it is known to produce a relaxed calming effect. On average these effects can last between 2-5 hours depending on the strain, the method of ingestion and the individual’s body chemistry.
Is Kratom legal?
Kratom is legal at the federal level in the United States and Canada, though there are a handful of States, cities, and counties where local legislation has been passed banning Kratom. Kratom is 100% legal across the entire state of Idaho.
What are the different varieties of Kratom?
Kratom is typically available in dried leaf form, powdered form, tinctures, capsules, or extracts. Kratom products are usually defined by their type as well as their strain. The types are classified based on the color of the central leaf vein which includes White Vein, Red Vein, and Green Vein. The strains are generally named for the region in which they were grown. The most common names for the various strains are Thai, Indo, Malay, Borneo, and Mang Dae.
How much should I use?
If it is your first experience with Kratom, it is recommended that you start with a smaller serving and evaluate the effects before adjusting or increasing your preferred serving to meet your personal needs. It can take anywhere between 20-90 minutes for effects to be experienced. It is important to remember that strength varies based on type and strain as well. Also keep in mind that it is possible to develop a tolerance to Kratom, so as with all things in life, moderation is key. While we cannot give direct advice in relation to any specific goals or conditions, there are many excellent forums available both online and off where you may seek out answers from people dealing with similar situations. We encourage you to do your own research based on your personal needs.
Is Kratom dangerous?
When used responsibly and in moderation Kratom does not pose any great risk. Unfortunately there has been a great deal of public debate due to misinformation and lack of widely available research on the topic. While the alkaloids in Kratom do bind to certain opioid receptors, it is not an opiate, which is the term used for substances that come from the opium poppy. Kratom does not affect the respiratory system like opiates do. When used in sensible moderation, the health and addiction risks associated with Kratom are minimal. Kratom use may impair your ability to drive or operate heavy equipment, so use with discretion. If you are currently pregnant or nursing or if you are currently taking any prescriptions medications, please consult with your healthcare provider before beginning any new herbal regimen.
